First Grade
Welcome to 1st Grade!!
Integrated Language Arts
The following components are included in the first grade integrated language arts (I.L.A) program:
· Reading
· Self-Selected Reading (SSR)
· Writing
· Word Work
· Handwriting
· Literature
Reading
Some of the objectives for 1st grade include:
· decode words in grade-level texts
· blend sounds and syllables to form words
· acquire strategies to use before, during, and after reading a selection
· read for literary experience, to be informed, and to perform tasks
· develop and apply vocabulary through exposure to a variety of texts
· develop comprehension skills through exposure to a variety of texts
· read grade-level text with expression and at an appropriate rate
Students will read:
· anthologies from the Harcourt Brace Reading Series
· trade books
· big books
· poems
· pattern books
· non-fiction texts

Writing
Some of the objectives for 1st grade include:
· Compose texts using the prewriting and drafting strategies of effective writers and speakers
· Compose oral, written, and visual presentations that express personal ideas, inform, and persuade
· Compose texts using the revising and editing strategies of effective writers and speakers
· Identify how language choices in writing and speaking affect thoughts and feelings
· Use effective details, words, and figurative language in the student's own composing
· Use information from various sources to accomplish a purpose
