The kindergarten program in Harford County is planned as an integral part of the continuous program of education.  It is designed to meet the specific needs of the young child at his/her present state of development.

We recognize the necessity of all aspects of a child’s growth - intellectual, social, physical and emotional.  The kindergarten environment will provide stimulating experiences and opportunities to enable each child to:

  • Acquire a foundation for learning and become interested in many kinds of things

  • Develop a positive feeling about oneself and about his/her ability to create and learn

  • Participate in activities that increase physical and mental health and development positive habits of personal care

  • Understand his/her strengths and limitations and cope with success and failure

  • Meet and work with persons of different sexes, races, ages, cultures, and economic background

A basic principle of kindergarten education is that each child will develop at his/her own pace.  Therefore, the program is personalized to meet the strengths, needs, and interests of each child.  As each child matures in physical, social and intellectual skills, necessary program adjustments are made.  We encourage children to be children--to laugh, play, talk, and learn by manipulating and experimenting with materials and feel good about themselves and what they can do!

This is the second year our kindergarten students will be attending full-day.  The kindergarten framework includes an opening to the day, literature based language arts focusing on social studies, science, or writers/illustrators’ workshop, learning centers, a rest period, music, art, physical education, math, outdoor play, and dismissal.
