Music in First Grade

 

During First Grade, students will:

·        Identify the voices of men, women, and children

·        Identify classroom instruments by name and family

·        Identify music as loud or soft/ fast or slow/ high or low

·        Identify music as fast or slow

·        Perform a steady beat while singing or listening

·        Identify and perform the quarter note, quarter rest, and eighth note pairs in short rhythmic patterns

·        Show patterns of strong and weak beats in music using body percussion

·        Echo short rhythmic and melodic patterns

·        Perform 2 and 4 beat ostinatos with familiar songs

·        Identify melodic direction as upward or downward

·        Listen for pitches that are the same, and pitches that are different

·        Identify harmony by listening for accompaniment

·        Identify the form of a song by listening for repeating and contrasting sections

·        Experience music of different cultures, including Native American, French, German, Spanish, English, Scottish, and Irish

·        Sing a variety of music, including game songs, folksongs, action songs, and seasonal songs

·        Experience the music and story of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”
