Music at Prospect Mill Elementary

Prospect Mill students experience music through singing, playing instruments, moving, dancing, playing singing games, composing, improvising, and listening in a creative and energetic classroom environment.  All music lessons are aligned with the Harford County Music Curriculum, the Voluntary State Curriculum, and the National Standards for Music Education.  Throughout the year, students are exposed to a variety of music of different cultures, time periods, composers, and styles in a fun and educational setting.  Musical skills are spiraled in the curriculum from kindergarten to grade 5.  Mrs. Murray, Mrs. Kraft, and Mr. Urban believe that all students should be musically literate.  Therefore, students begin to learn formal music notation in the first grade and continue building upon these skills throughout elementary school.  While in music class, your child will:

v    Sing and listen to a varied repertoire of music, including, American folk songs, patriotic songs, and songs from around the world

v    Perform on classroom instruments, recorders (3^rd grade), and Orff instruments (xylophones and tone bells)

v    Learn to read and write music on a basic elementary level

v    Improvise and compose melodies

v    Relate music to world cultures and world history

v    Evaluate the musical elements of a song (rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, dynamics, tempo, and form) by using appropriate vocabulary

v    Evaluate a musical performance by using appropriate vocabulary

v    Relate music to other arts and to other subjects
